For those that don’t know, IHG (the Intercontinental Hotel Group which includes Intercontinental and Holiday Inn among its brands), runs a quarterly promotion called Accelerate. It’s a bit of an odd promotion in that everyone gets a different set of goals and then one is awarded various seemingly random amounts of points for each task and then for hitting most or all of the tasks you generally are offered a nice bonus.

The summer Accelerate is wrapping up and the Fall one was just announced.  I got a rather interesting set of offers and I wanted to share how I’ll approach it to maximize it.

Here’s a link to see your own Accelerate offer for the Fall.

Below you can see my customized offer:

As you can see, I’ll get 1,500 points for a stay, 6,000 more if the stay is 4 nights, and 1,000 if I buy any quantity of points.  But then for completing ALL 3 of those “activities,” I’ll net 31,500 bonus points.  If I do it in September, I’ll get 2,500 more.

This means that as long as I book one 4-night stay in September, I’ll earn 42,500 bonus points.  I value IHG points around .6 cents a point. That’s $255 in points for completing one 4 night stay and buying 1,000 points.  Having to buy those 1,000 points does subtract $13.50 from the total, but they are worth $6 –  leaving me with $248.50 in value.

Now that we know how I can maximize my earnings, let’s think about reducing the cost of my stay…

A four-night stay is required. I have the Citi Prestige credit card which will give me the 4th night free.  So if I book a room that is $150 a night + tax, I’ll get back $150.

For a real example, if I needed 4 nights in College Park, MD, I could stay at the new Holiday Inn for $124 avg a night.

The Citi Prestige will give me back 496.86/ 4 = $124. So my out of pocket will be $437 and I’ll earn over 40,000 bonus points to use for my next stay. That 40,000 will buy me a free night in many cities or, at the least, enough to use with some cash for a Points + Cash booking. The value of those points is worth more than half of my 4-night stay!

Now, if I have a 4-night stay for the fall, I’ll certainly try to direct it to IHG for this promo. But if not, I may look for a very cheap property (think a rural Holiday Inn or similar) and see how cheap I can get those four nights so I can earn the bonus.
