Few things in Miles and Points get me as excited as chances to earn bonus Starpoints.  I love the upper end Starwood properties and would never stay at $400 + hotels if I wasn’t using points.

So when I saw a bonus offer come across my Twitter feed today (specifically via @PointsToPointB and @RunWithMiles), I immediately got excited.

And you indeed may have been targeted: To find out (assuming you didn’t get an email from Amex), click here for the offer page.

The offer, if you were selected, is

Earn 5,000 Starpoints after you spend $5,000 in qualifying purchases* using your Card.

Plus, earn an additional 5,000 Starpoints (for a total of 10,000 bonus Starpoints) after you spend an additional $5,000 (for a total of $10,000) in qualifying purchases on your Card.

Registration and spending must be completed by 10/15/16. See Terms and Conditions for more details.

My excitement faded quickly, though, as I was very much not targeted.

The qualification for targeting isn’t clear. While I have a Delta Amex, an SPG Amex and a HHonors Surpass that I use for work, I also have several non-Amex products.  I have done most of my 2016 Amex spend on the Delta card, so they’d have every reason to incentivize me to add spend to the SPG Amex.

And now that you also know about this offer, if you weren’t targeted it will probably make you feel worse about using the card, knowing that others are getting a better deal, no?  It continues to baffle me why any company in 2016, knowing that ANY offer they make to a targeted group will be known to all within literally minutes, don’t offer at least some kind of “me too” offer for those that hear about it. I understand they try promotions out in segmented ways to gauge effectiveness (and I have an MS in Marketing so I *really* understand), but I don’t agree with the strategy.

I do still love my SPG Amex, but it can be tough to justify significant spend on the card at a flat 1 point per dollar when there are no bonuses for more spend. I already have SPG Gold, so getting Gold for $40k in spend means nothing. There are no other threshold bonuses. The Delta Business Amex keeps me spending until I hit my second 10k MQM threshold bonus each year.  My additional spend tends to go to Chase and Capital One card products.

Looking to apply for a SPG Business American Express credit card? The current offer is 25,000 Starpoints when you spend $5k in 3 months.

So, were you targeted?
