I’ve mostly stayed out of posting about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, save for one Black Friday / Cyber Monday post that had compiled a few deals I thought were good. The main reason is that there were just so many “deals” that weren’t really deals and the constant flow made it impossible to keep up in a meaningful way (I really try to post just once or twice a day and when something feels “worth it.” There are plenty of blogs that can give you information overload if you prefer that.)

Well, here’s one from United Airlines: 20% off on award tickets to Hawaii. The skeptic in me figured the sale would be for winter – or lack any meaningful availability.

So imagine my surprise when I ran a search from Newark to Honolulu (not the easiest route to find availability for non-stop in winter) and found two seats, in the sale, mid-February. 36,000 miles each.

My first try.

There seems to be plenty of availability from both the East and West Coasts.

From United.com:

We’re offering rare savings on Hawaii travel: a roundtrip Saver Award ticket in United Economy® is just 36,000 miles, regularly 45,000 miles. Travel between January 7 and March 10 — peak whale-watching season — and book by December 8. It’s our little way of saying “mahalo” for 70 great years of service in Hawaii.

United offers nonstop service to the following destinations in Hawaii: Honolulu (HNL), Maui (OGG), Lihue (LIH), Kona (KOA) and Hilo (ITO)*.

Plenty of availability

Remember that you can transfer your Ultimate Rewards points into United miles instantly if you find a deal. Sadly, no deal on the business class flights (I can’t even find any Saver level there) but if you don’t mind coach, this is a nice use of your United miles (or Ultimate Rewards points).
