So is it worth it?

You are buying these for 1.89 cents per mile. When they were selling them for just about the same price in April, my advice was to run your own calculations on how you would redeem those miles. This includes actually finding availability on acceptable flights, holding those flights -remember, you can put award flights on hold to think about it – and then buying the miles.  My advice remains the same.

I value American Airlines AAdvantage miles at a bit more than a penny a mile. Maybe 1.25 cents. So I’m surely not banking them at 1.89 cents knowing they can (and will) be devalued down the road. But if I find a nice business or first class redemption where I’m getting a multiple of 2 cents per mile (think long haul international on partners like Cathay Pacific), then I’m all in.
