Very exciting news that American Airlines is now selling flights from the US to Cuba for as little as $198. When I went just a few months ago, because we were forced to take charter flights, I paid almost $600 just to fly from Miami to Cuba. And the flight was on American!!

If you read my article “Travel to Cuba from the US: Your 10 biggest questions… answered.” you know that I’ve recently been and am a huge fan of going now before the island changes.

These are regular American Airlines flights now (not charter) and you will be entitled to all AAdvantage perks like upgrades and earning miles.
Remember that you do still need to self-certify as traveling to Cuba for one of the acceptable reasons, but that covers basically anyone.

U.S. to Cuba travel policy

Flying to Cuba from or through the U.S. for tourism is not allowed. There are 12 acceptable travel reasons:

You can also use American AAdvantage miles to go to Cuba, subject to limitations, now. The flights must be round trip and count as being in the Caribbean zone for pricing. You’ll need to call in to do that as the award flights to Cuba aren’t loaded into the website at this time.

  1. It’s a limited inventory fare but I just found MIA to CFG for $289 in October. I don’t see a specified end date in the T&Cs but obviously there are limited seats per flight at the cheapest fares.
