Amex kills off the SPG signup bonuses

Sad times if you wanted an SPG Amex signup bonus to help soften the blow of the new combined SPG/Marriott program only yielding 2/3 the points that it used to on non-bonused spend.  I’ve been saying for a while to get the cards, especially the personal one since we know it will close to new applicants if you wanted the bonus.

As of today, the bonus offers have gone from 25,000 – 35,000 Starpoints (worth 75,000 to 105,000 Marriott points) to zero.

They are still offering a “Welcome bonus” but that includes no Starpoints. I wonder if part of the new contract with Amex stipulated this because I just can’t see people signing up for this now.

The new offer is:

  • Earn a $100 statement credit after you make $1,000 in purchases on the Card within your first 3 months of Card Membership.
  • Plus, earn an additional $100 statement credit after your first purchase on the Card at a participating SPG® or Marriott Rewards® hotel within your first 6 months of Card Membership.

Many that hadn’t had the Business version were able to get the 35,000 Starpoint bonus offer a couple of months ago, but I’m sure some held out on the personal version, hoping for the same offer. Instead, there’s this.

We can only hope they re-activate a points-based offer before August when the personal card will close to new applications. But it may well be just that – hope.

Well, I think my feelings are clear. Does anyone have a different take?  Let me know here, on Twitter, or in the private MilesTalk Facebook group.
