American Airlines sent me an email touting an offer to get a 30% bonus on transfers from Marriott to AA.

Sounds appealing, right? Here’s the table they have on the transfer page:

So should you do this?  Well, assuming you really need AA miles (I can’t stress enough to never just speculatively transfer points), there may be a better way:

  • Transfer Marriott to your SPG account and then transfer 20,000 SPG > AA. 60,000 Marriott becomes 20,000 SPG which would get a 5,000 point bonus added by SPG and the same 30% bonus = 32,500 AA miles. Note from the above chart, just transferring your Marriott would net you only 26,000 AA. That’s a 6,500 mile difference just by moving your Marriott to SPG first.
  • Once you hit 70,000 Marriott on the chart above, though, you’ll do better transferring Marriott instead of SPG.

Unfortunately the offer excludes Flight + Hotel package from Marriott.

You could also open a Marriott credit card to get an extra 80,000 Marriott points if you are after a bigger transfer amount or a Flight + Hotel package.
