Citi has just rolled out a few changes to their ThankYou earning premium card lineup to enhance the offerings during these difficult times.

Citi Premier Card

Citi is rolling our the new 3X bonus categories early.

💳 If you are in a cash crunch, you should avoid travel rewards credit cards until you are caught up. Here are our favorite credit cards for Intro 0% APR offers and for balance transfer offers

Expedited to June 2, 2020 (originally slated to start August 23, 2020), in addition to the categories in which existing Citi Premier cardholders currently earn additional points, cardholders will earn:

  • 3 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on supermarket purchases (instead of 1 point per $1 spent)
  • 3 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on restaurant purchases, including takeout and curbside pickup (instead of 2 points per $1 spent)

Read our full analysis of the changes coming to the Citi Premier card. It’s nice that the new benefits have been launched sooner, just keep in mind we lose some later on…

Citi Prestige Card

Citi Prestige cardholders will get 5 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on all online purchases up to 7,500 points, through August 31, 2020.

Examples of eligible purchases include:

  • Retailer website orders
  • Online grocery orders
  • Online drugstore orders

Note this means you can spend $1,500 total during this time in which you’ll receive the bonus points.

Personally I am likely to just grab a $1,500 Amazon gift card since that is 95% of my purchases these days, but if you are buying from a variety of online retailers, this should be easy enough.

Keep in mind that, in addition to Travel purchases, purchases made with a Citi Prestige Card at Supermarkets and Restaurants (including takeout) will also count toward the “Expanded $250 Travel Credit” benefit between May 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020.

Summary

It’s nice to see issuers continuing to step up benefits on their premium cards to make up for the travel benefits we can’t currently use.
