A few days ago, the offers for both the personal Chase Marriott Rewards Premier credit card and the Business Chase Marriott credit cards changed. Instead of 80,000 Marriott Rewards points when you spend $3,000, you’ll now get a bit less, at 75,000 – but the annual fee is waived the first year.  5,000 Marriott points are worth about $25-$35, so you come out ahead in this new deal, in my opinion.

Remember that you can freely transfer Marriott points to SPG, so this also equals 25,000 Starpoints (equivalent to the current SPG Amex signup bonus). And if you are new to SPG via Marriott, you may be interested in a post I wrote last year about maximizing points in the merger.

The Chase personal card is subject to 5/24, but the business card is not. So even if you have had more than 5 Chase cards in the last 24 months, you are eligible for the business version of this card.

Marriott / SPG points are an amazing transferrable currency. SPG Starpoints transfer to, by far, the most airlines around the world, with a 25% bonus for transfers of 20,000 points.  And Marriott has its Travel Packages, where you can get a boatload of miles if you are already booking 7 nights in a hotel.

Most importantly, Marriott has said it plans to refresh its credit cards in 2018 as a result of the merger. It plans to offer a new high end consumer card and a new business card. My hunch is that the business card as it is now will go away in favor of the new card, so you might as well get both signup bonuses.  And that’s why, if I had to pick, I would get the Marriott business card right away.
