American Express has offered a 100,000 Hilton Honors point bonus on the Surpass card before. Many times.

But they have upped the ante on their most recent offer, throwing in a free weekend night almost anywhere in the Hilton portfolio on your one year anniversary. This offer is valid until May 31, 2017. $3,000 spend in 3 months is required for the bonus.

The annual fee is $75 and is not waived the first year.  So essentially you are paying:

$75 for 100,000 points in year 1.

$75 for a weekend night anywhere in year 2

I value Hilton Honors points around a third of a cent per point.  So you are getting $330 worth of points for $75 in year 1 and whatever deal you can find for that night in year 2 – easily north of $500 if you do it right. The free weekend night can be combined before or after any paid or award nights.

So for $150 in fees you’ll earn over $800 in Hilton nights + the benefits of the card which include automatic Hilton Gold status (mid-tier so definitely not useless) and you can earn Diamond status with $40k of spend in a calendar year.

Remember that you can only get an American Express bonus once per lifetime so it’s always best to get the card when you will actually use the benefits of the signup offer (they often increase over time as the currencies get devalued) and always Google around to make sure you are getting the best possible offer.

You can always downgrade the card to the fee-free version after the second year if you don’t value the Gold status and opportunity for Diamond via spending at $75.
