Confirmed: Hilton May Extend Free Night Certificates

This was a rumor uncovered earlier in the week by Doctor of Credit has word of an internal Hilton memo regarding an extension of Free Night Reward certificates due to expire on August 31st, 2021 through January 3rd, 2022.

This has now been confirmed by Hilton via Ariana Arghandewal at TPG and I have additionally gotten confirmation now directly from Hilton.

I’d called Hilton out just last week about this when IHG extended their expiring certificates.

Background on Hilton Free Night Certificates and Expirations

All Free Night Rewards certificates (these are earned via the various Hilton Amex credit cards – mostly via spend thresholds except for the Hilton Aspire which earns it annually) that were earned up to and including August 30, 2020 are currently set to expire this August 31st.

Meanwhile, all Free Night Reward certificates earned since then and issued before Dec 31, 2021 are valid for a full 24 months.

Additionally, while these certificates are only meant to be valid on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, Hilton expanded that to any night of the week for the time being (would be great if they made that permanent!).

Unfortunately, while the certificates are better than any issued by any other hotel branded credit card, you can’t see them online, you can’t check expiration online, and you can’t book online. Any of those actions requires a call to Hilton.

For me, this is a massive help. I have two expiring in August that I’d love to be able to use later in the year. I may be able to use them in August but everything is so up in the air right now…

  1. I received an email from Hilton today advising me that my older free night certificates (2 certificates) I received from my Aspire card have been extended to January 3, 2022. No rumor it is now confirmed, at least in my case.

  2. I called on 5/28 after receiving the email regarding the extension but the Hilton agent said she still sees the original expiration date of 8/31/21. She wanted to transfer me to a Diamond desk staff but I ended up waiting 20+ min and couldn’t hold on the phone anymore.
