brazil travel ban

As of this Thursday, May 28th, Brazilian nationals will (temporarily) not be able to enter the United States. This includes anyone departing Brazil and also includes anyone that has been in Brazil within the previous 14 days.

Trump Administration Bans Travel to the US from Brazil

Trump had already banned travel from China, Schengen-Zone Europe, the UK, Ireland, and Iran. Those remain in place.

Brazil has been trending upwards in coronavirus cases for weeks now, and frankly I’ve been wondering why there wouldn’t be a similar ban on those entering from Brazil.

Here’s a graph of the trajectory of the virus in Brazil:

By contrast, here is the current trend in the United States, where, far from “beating the virus,” we have at least leveled off significantly, with healthcare systems only currently overwhelmed in a few isolated area. (Of course, with Memorial Day weekend festivities, only a couple of weeks time will tell if all the easing measures reverse the trend.

The ban on Brazilians entering under these circumstances certainly makes sense. Brazil reports 363,000 cases, 150,000 recovered, and 22,666 total deaths as of today.

Should we also have a similar temporary ban on Russia?

What would also make sense would be a similar ban on Russia, which is not doing well at all, with the 2nd most cases worldwide as of today.

They report 344,000 cases, 113,000 recovered, and just 3,541 deaths. (The deaths figure seems oddly low to me.)

The USA, by contrast, has 1.68 million confirmed cases, 339,000 confirmed recovered, and 97,992 deaths.

Exclusions from the Ban on Travel from Brazil to the USA

Citizens and legal permanent residents of the United States can still return, as can their spouse, parent or child.
