Chase Sapphire Reserve

According to Doctor of Credit, this is now dead. Perhaps it was a test, perhaps it was a mistake, perhaps it was actually intended for a future month (which would explain why the coding made it seem intended. Seems to have credited the 5X/3X through July 5th.

Last week, Chase announced bonus categories for Streaming, Gas, and Instacart for Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred cardmembers to take advantage of this summer.

Dining Seems to Code at the Same 5X/3X as Gas

As reported by Doctor of Credit, Frequent Miler, and Miles to Memories, the Reserve is earning 5X on dining (instead of the usual 3X) and the Preferred is earning 3X on dining instead of the usual 2X.

Based on reader comments, this bonus is likely valid from now until September 30th and likely has a total spending cap of $3,000.

Again, since Chase has never communicated this, it could end at any time (or, more likely, be announced officially). It does apparently show as a separate bonus earn (i.e. 3X on dining and then +2X on dining) lending credence to it being an intended bonus category.

It should work with the usual dining options – meaning any actual restaurant as well as delivery apps like Seamless, Grubhub, Door Dash, Uber Eats, and Postmates.

5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on Dining is like an effective 8.75% return on dining spend, using the MilesTalk Ultimate Rewards value of 1.75cpp. (of course, if you just redeem for credits or in the portal, Chase Sapphire Reserve points are worth 1.5cpp and Chase Sapphire Preferred points are worth 1.25cpp

No other credit cards have a better return for dining spend than 5X URs on the Reserve.

Don’t Forget You Can “Shop Small” for $5 off $10

Don’t forget, though that you can earn $5 off $10 at Amex “Shop Small” merchants which may be a better deal than 5X points. I made the unfortunate mistake of earning 5X on some small purchases over the weekend where I could have gotten the $5 off with my Amex.
