We all know how the Avios currency that IAG owns started as the currency of British Airways and is now not only BA currency, but is also the program for Aer Lingus, Iberia, LEVEL, and most recently, Qatar Airways.
Fiji Airways didn’t have a loyalty program until now.
While details are unclear, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Avios is one currency but also separate currencies. Your Qatar Avios follow an award chart for Qatar and are held in a Qatar Avios account which is separate from, for example, your British Airways Avios account.
You can freely transfer between any of the programs, which is great for using the program most advantageous to your particular award needs.
The question is if Fiji will be similar, with its own program operating on the AAdvantage framework, or if you will be joining / using the American Airlines AAdvantage program itself.
This is especially interesting because of the wave of thousands of people that American unilaterally banned from AAdvantage in 2020 without explanation or any ability to ask for reconsideration.
I’ve reached out to Fiji’s media relations to see if they can provide clarity on this. As of press time they have not returned comment.
