Cathay Pacific’s AsiaMiles program can be an excellent way to book Oneworld award flights. In fact, not long ago I wrote about how AsiaMiles is the best program for booking premium cabin flights on British Airways with the lowest possible carrier-imposed surcharges (i.e. fees just to have fees).

Cathay Pacific’s AsiaMiles Mileage Expiration Rules
One issue with AsiaMiles concerns accruing miles long term, as they expire 3 years after they are earned, and cannot be extended. Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer does the same and it’s a huge impediment to doing speculative transfers or choosing these programs as a place to accrue and store miles for Oneworld and Star Alliance flights, respectively.
Now, the rules have been improved
Today, AsiaMiles announced they will now allow you to extend mileage expiration on miles earned starting January 1, 2020.
This is a really big deal. This means that you could extend expiration just by transferring a token amount of miles over. This is what I suggest people do with Avianca Lifemiles as well, whose miles expire after 1 year but can be extended.
It’s very important to note that this will NOT apply to miles in your account now or earned before the start of 2020. They will use old miles first when you book an award, but if you earned, for example, 40,000 miles on Dec 31, 2019, they would still expire Dec 31, 2022 and would not be extendable. At that point, the old system will officially be retired.
