Oktoberfest 2020 Officially Cancelled

Coronavirus takes another victim – this time the world-famous Oktoberfest that started at the end of September each year in Munich, Germany.

With Spain and Italy already turning out the lights on tourism for (probably) the rest of 2020 and Germany just beginning to feel it has gained control over the coronavirus fight, cancelling such a massive social gathering really isn’t a huge surprise.

It was just March 6th when SXSW was cancelled. That was one of the first major gatherings cancelled, but a massive number have followed.

Why Cancel Oktoberfest Now?

Many might be asking why they would cancel Oktoberfest in April when it occurs over 5 months later. The simple answer is that it takes a tremendous amount of resources (people and money) to plan an event of this size. Logistics likely began as early as last November and the decision to bail out now means that they assume the chances of it being cancelled later are high enough that they don’t want to assume the burden of another 5.5 months of administrative costs. Sad to say, I think it’s the right move.
