Aeroplan has announced a new 30% bonus on transfers from hotel partners. For the most part, transferring from hotels to miles is a terrible idea. However, for those with Marriott (and ex-SPG) points, this may work out for you.
During the promotion, a block of 60,000 Marriott points would become a respectable 32,500 Aeroplan miles. 70,000 miles would be a magic number with Aeroplan as that would book a 1st class flight on Lufthansa from Germany to the US (taxes are lower inbound to the US than outbound).
With this bonus, you could either transfer 134,000 Marriott points for that 1st class flight or combo it as 120,000 Marriott and then a 5k to off from American Express.
Of course, you can use Aeroplan for a variety of Star Alliance flights besides Lufthansa F.
You can also fly US – Europe round trip for 110k Aeroplan miles (only useful on an airline without fuel surcharges such as United or LOT.
Aeroplan is also great for stopovers. If you book a round trip, you can have two free stopovers or a stopover and an open jaw. That can present some phenomenal value.
Long story short, there’s a 30% transfer bonus on now from hotel programs to Aeroplan…
