Last week, I wrote about the imminent change over from Hard Rock’s Wild Card program in Atlantic City to the master Hard Rock Unity program. We didn’t know what it might mean for the Status Match Merry Go Round™.
The changeover happened as planned yesterday, Jan 9th, and of course there were MilesTalkers on the ground to test the waters immediately.
MilesTalker Jared M. has been in touch with me as he bounced back and forth between Hard Rock and Ocean and things look grim. Especially with some correlating info from MilesTalker Aaron S.
Keep in mind that this is all fresh and we don’t know what will happen over time, but he has reported negative developments at both casinos.
In this article
Hard Rock Atlantic City
- Both Jared and Aaron have been told that the match is now once per lifetime. Remember you could match back to Rock Royalty under the Hard Rock Wild Card program every year (and I did!). What we are not quiet sure of yet is if you can match once to Unity ICON (from Caesars Diamond) if you previously matched to Hard Rock’s Wild Card Rock Royalty – or if even previous Wild Card matches exclude you from one more match. Since Aaron was denied based on a 3 year old Unity match, but Jared was told he could match once to Unity, I think the limitation is just once per lifetime in the new Unity program, so if you haven’t yet matched to Unity (like, for example, in Vegas at the Mirage in the past year), you should be able to match ONCE.
- I also want to note that I’m entirely unsure when Unity matches from the last year expire. The website says you keep the status 14 months from the end of the year you earn status. But does that apply to matches? Customer support could not tell me. Both of my Unity accounts – one from Mirage Unity (matched March 2023) and one from Atlantic City Wild Card (matched last September 2023) – simply say I’m ICON and I need to earn 15,000 points by Dec 31, 2024 to retain ICON status. But neither actually says when my status expires and I suspect we won’t know until March 1st what the score is there. I believe those that EARNED status have a more complete message including their expiration dates.
- If Unity is really now a once per lifetime match, then you either have already had your last match to Ocean or you have one more because….
Ocean Atlantic City
Remember, Ocean stopped even matching to MGM Gold. You now need MGM Platinum or Caesars Seven Star. The exception was Hard Rock’s Rock Royalty and ICON status which is stated clearly on their brochure as both being acceptable.
On top of that, you can only match to Ocean from Hard Rock once every 18 months now.
But don’t fret – it gets *worse*.
- First, Jared was told that the match was now subject to play requirements at the discretion of the person matching you. Now I don’t want you to read TOO much into this as I think she was shooting from the hip. After all, how can you punish a lack of play when your own rules state you can’t have played in 18 months?! Truly, they should change the policy to 18 months from your last match so as to encourage actual play but, you know, I don’t work there….
- But the truly bad news he got (which I’d like more MilesTalkers to confirm when we hit March) is that they say they are no longer granting those that match from March through June (the program year expires June 30th) an extra year. For the past two years, a March match would get you March-June + July – June (up to 15 months). If true, a March match would last just 3 months, meaning that those due for their 18 month match in March (hi, that’s me 👋) would do better to wait for July 1st. But the risk there is that the new program year in July changes matches further (to what, I don’t want to speculate – but you never know, they could end the tier matching altogether).Still if that March-June extension is gone, someone matching in June would have to use the MSC Cruise and Resorts World Las Vegas nights within 3 months (you have to use them by the end of the program year you have qualified for).
So what now?
Data points. We need more data points.
We need to hear if people that matched to Wild Card Rock Royalty are still able to match once to ICON. We need more data points from people matching at Ocean (but I think this info does say that if you have Hard Rock ICON or Rock Royalty NOW and haven’t matched to Ocean, you could get 6 months as a sure thing rather than roll the dice in March or July.
I’ll probably be able to make a trip in late March, depending on what data points flow in about Ocean and depending on if my ICON status extends through 2024 or not.
One tiny glimmer of hope is that one random MilesTalker was able to match their ICON to MGM Gold at the MGM Grand in Vegas. However, they matched in December and got a January expiration date (2 months).
Who knows, maybe in February that will be a potential lifeline for one more year?
So please – keep me posted and I’ll do the same for you.
Wishing all of us luck!

So I matched to Icon at the mirage in vegas last year right after the switch using mgm gold. I haven’t been to AC yet. Is it worth it for me to go? I’ve never matched to ocean yet obviously, and it sounds like I can once and the status would last 6 months??? I would still be able to get the cruise and free nights in vegas if I go now or that is questionable now? And I have until when to do this you think? Thx!
A tiny sliver of hope: Maybe a month ago, I called the Ocean casino desk and talked to a guy that seemed to know what’s up. I casually mentioned the March 1st or after date for signing up for the Ocean Prime tier match and he said “well, we don’t yet know if we’ll extend the March and after signups into the new 2024-25 year automatically. We’ll announce that in March”.
My take is that it’s basically a courtesy they are extending year by year, and it might not happen this year for those signing up March 1st or afterward. But we might not actually know until they announce something after March 1st or until folks actually get matched to 2024-25 Prime status on July 1st. Or perhaps in mid-late February, the kind casino staff will advise those seeking matches to hold off for a couple weeks and match after March 1 2024 so they get an extra 12 months of Prime for the 2024-25 membership year.
Just speculation! 🙂
not seeing any status match offer online, is that not going on at the moment? for those new to unity but not wild card?
I matched my rock royalty to Seminole elite at hard rock Hollywood guitar. I got mailed an icon card when they switched over I wonder if they counts as a match to icon
If I matched to Hard Rock Unity Icon status in late May of 2023 at the Mirage in Vegas, does that mean that my Unity Icon status will expire on 2/29/24?
We think so.
Adding a data point here. For context this was my first ever run at the “casino merry go round”
Today (Jan 15 2024), I took my Caesar’s diamond status (have through FoundersCard) to the Hard Rock in Atlantic City. I was matched to Unity Icon status. It seems it was an extremely shortened match period (expires Feb 29, 2024), but I didn’t really care. This gave me the following:
$50 in free slot play
2 free nights (bookable after 72 hours)
I then took my Hard Rock Unity Icon status to Ocean and was matched to Ocean Prime status until June 30 2024. I was given the following:
2 free weekday nights at Ocean Casino in Atlantic City (must stay within 60 days)
2 free nights at Resorts World in Vegas, including $100 in free play and $100 dining credit (must stay before June 30 2024 – only becomes available on Feb 15 2024)
Up to 10 day free MSC cruise excluding China (again, must sail before June 30 2024 and only becomes available on Feb 15 2024)
Free entry for 2 into the Avila Lounge buffet (must be used within 72 hours of matching)
1 free t-shirt
I also happened to be going to Philadelphia right afterwards, so I also went to the Live! Casino there to give that a try. They told me they are NOT matching and that they stopped matching in Dec 31, 2023. The rewards agent didn’t seem to know if they would ever resume or not.
Hope this is helpful to some people and let me know if there are any questions!
Thanks for the dp. Do you have any idea if matching at ocean March 1 will still work to get all those things?
No idea
Also is the cruise for 2 people?
Yes
For the 2 free nights at Resorts World in Vegas, I thought that had to be booked by 6/30, but the stay could take place later on?
That’s actually a good question, let me look and see and get back to you
Sounds good. Keep me posted. Thanks!
My Hard Rock account says Icon online and says earn 15k by 12/31/24 to remain Icon. I wonder if that means I can keep it till next yr even though my HR card is printed for this yr
FWIW mine says the same but the card says 2/2024 so I guess we’ll find out for sure March 1!
I matched my diamond card to Hard rock icon yesterday in AC. It expires 2/2024. The customer service attendant said come back after March 1st 2024 and they will give me icon card good for the rest of the year.
Good info!
Even if your status was expired? I’m kind of surprised by that.
For clarity, I did this today and the attendant told me to come back with my Caesars Diamond card (card right now expires 1/2024 and so they want me to bring one that notes my status until 1/2025) and they’ll give me a new icon card.
Hi Dave, I’m curious how you would play the following scenario – I’m in the northeast but going to LV for a work trip this month, and a personal trip later in the spring. Would you match Caesar’s Diamond to Hard Rock Icon (hopefully!) and maybe Ocean and see how it goes…
Or try to match at the Mirage in LV and see if it works that way?
I guess there’s no downside to trying both? just wondering if one is strategically preferable to the other.
Thanks!
I would match at AC based on Rich’s comment above. Mirage is clearly saying once per lifetime.
So before my MGM gold expired for the last time (thanks Hyatt) I wanted to try this out. Caesars didn’t even want to match me because their year ends January 31st as well. I’m fairly certain I blew the whole thing but I’m going to give it a go anyway at Hard Rock. Ideally I’d wait until March to match at Ocean but if Hard Rock ends in February I’m not really sure WHAT I’m doing.
status matched to Icon back in December with February 2024 expiration from GN Chairman. lady at hard rock said I am able to tier match again if I have eligible status after February.
I just tier matched to Ocean Prime with my Icon card, expiring February 2024.
Looks like my Hard Rock Unity status reset. I am now Star status unfortunately.
Take your Caesar’s Diamond down to Bally’s and get Superstar. Hard Rock will match Icon to Superstar. Then Icon to Prime. I just did it in mid-July. 10 night cruise Gran Canaria to Valencia Spain booked.
