Interestingly, since points use a chart, you will want to check cash prices first.
For example, I tried a sample Acela route and, even their cash fares turned out to be on sale. $58 for an Acela NYC – BOS is pretty insanely cheap.
Even with the redemption sale it would be 3,238 points. Definitely better to pay cash!
If you were going to go for the auto train, you’d see a nice points discount, with a room for 15,080 points vs $708 cash – more than 5cpp in value. Amtrak points are usually good for around 2cpp.
