Just in case you have forgotten, Marriott Bonvoy is going fully dynamic with award pricing in 2023.
2022 was the year that dynamic pricing started, but with caps in place and 97% of properties at or below their previous limits.
But 2023 is more mysterious. We don’t know exactly how things will play out once it’s fully dynamic. It may mean that awards currently priced st 100,000 points, like a $2,500 night in the Maldives, could jump to as much as 500,000 (rough guess at a 0.5 cent per point value).
Or maybe Marriott will realize the detachment of loyalty that business travelers will have once they realize that they no longer earn nearly enough points from Marriott to take the family on vacation with them.
Either way, I have several bookings planned that can bring me from a million points at the start of this year all they way down to about 40,000 points. Around 300,000 of those points are 2023 bookings that I may cancel if the fully dynamic pricing isn’t always as low as my guesstimate example above.
But if it is, and roughly half a cent becomes the norm all over the world, I’ll happily burn the points down to 42,000 and save those for topping up 35,000 point Marriott Bonvoy credit card certificates.
Bottom line:
We won’t know for sure what will occur in terms of Bonvoy pricing in 2023 until it happens. But booking speculative stays before the end of 2022 for any time in 2023 could turn out to be a very wise move…
