Air Canada’s Status Match
Air Canada is out with a new Status Match offer for US flyers, per View from the Wing. The match is being run by StatusMatch and is actually being sponsored by Destination Canada (a government entity that works to increase Canadian tourism).
You’ll get your matched status through the end of 2021 and it will be extended through 2022 if you fly just one round trip with Air Canada (on Air Canada metal, which includes Air Canada Express and Rouge) before January 15, 2022.
What Matches to What?
They have this useful table to let you know what they will match you to.
I find the chart frankly a bit bizarre. Someone that got 2 credit cards to earn the Southwest Companion Pass would be eligible for Air Canada’s 75k tier, whereas someone that earned 50,000 Delta MQMs and thus Delta Gold (which is also SkyTeam Elite – the equivalent of Star Alliance Gold) is NOT eligible for even the 50k tier at Air Canada (which is the minimum to also be granted Star Alliance Gold status). That Delta Gold would only be given Air Canada’s 35k level which, while it allows select Maple Leaf lounge access, is only Star Alliance Silver.
On the other end of the spectrum, AA’s Concierge Key and Delta’s 360 members (both invite only tiers) will be matched to top tier with Air Canada.
Star Alliance Gold
Star Alliance Gold status matters primarily for United flyers in the US. That’s because United’s own Premier Gold earns a version of Star Alliance Gold that does NOT include domestic United Club access when flying United. Yet, with any other Star Alliance Gold status, you could be flying New York to Chicago and you’ll be allowed to use the United Club.
Fine Print
They say to expect a response in 3 days. Note that you won’t be able to match again for 2 years, which isn’t bad at all, considering some airlines (like Alaska) have once in a lifetime matches.
Interestingly, they do not address if an existing Air Canada elite is eligible. I’m a 25k from the points transfer promotion in 2020 since Air Canada status was extended to 2022.
More fine print is covered in their FAQ.
