Grand Hyatt Kauai - Oceanview Suite

Many people earned Hyatt’s Globalist top-tier status this year. That’s because on top of a double elite nights promo in January and February of 2021, they also halved the requirement to earn Globalist from 60 to 30 nights. In theory, you could have done this in as little as 10 actual nights in Jan/Feb including the 5 elite nights from a World of Hyatt credit card.

While this does mean true Globalist status, you get more as you stay more. At 50 nights you get 2 Suite Upgrade awards good for up to 7 nights at a time in a standard suite, confirmed at booking. You get two more at 60 nights, which is also when you get your Hyatt Concierge assigned as well as a Category 1-7 free night certificate.

At 70, 80, 90, and 100 nights, you get a choice at each level: 1 Suite Upgrade Award or 10,000 points.

If you don’t care much about Suites, then you would probably take the points, easily worth $150-$200 on a bad day.

But if you do value confirmed suites and you will hit 70 nights by Friday, here’s a quick tip:

You have 90 days to select. Unlike with Marriott’s Bonvoy, where selecting a Choice Benefit in 2022 vs 2021 has no effect (it all expires the same time regardless), that’s not the case with Hyatt. If you earn 70+ nights anytime after October 2nd, you can wait until Jan 1 of the following year to select the Suite Upgrade Award.

This means that if you have one pending now (not yet selected) and wait for January 1st, 2022, it won’t expire until Feb 28th, 2024 (vs expiry Feb 28, 2023 if you select it now).

That’s what I’m doing. In case I can’t re-qualify for Globalist in 2022 for 2023, I know I’ll have at least one guaranteed upgrade to use regardless of my status level.

As an aside, and in case you missed it, Nick at FM also covered a Hyatt angle wherein you may be able to trade expiring Club Access awards for 3,000 points a piece. He also got 10,000 points for an expiring Cat 1-4 certificate and 20,000 points for an expiring Cat 1-7 cert. Not bad!
