For those not familiar with the option to earn American Express Membership Rewards instead of cash, it’s been an option for a while now. But you need to create a whole new account. I did this a few months ago and had no problems, though I did make sure my email address in my Amex account was not the same one as in my cash back earning account. I think that is probably key since the account gets auto-created when you link your Amex card.

I can say that I have switched all my earnings to the Amex MRs. To me, it’s a no brainer. I value American Express Membership Rewards points around 1.75 cents each, meaning I’m yielding 75% more back this way.
