If you have recently applied for a new credit card and meeting that minimum spend requirement is proving difficult, it’s worth knowing that there is a new coin deal at the US Mint tomorrow that can solve it for you.
There are two deals at the same time.
First, I’m recommending PFS Buyers Club as they are the only coin dealer I’ve worked with online personally and have always been paid. It’s worth noting that when deals are really hot, they are usually one of the lowest payouts. But you may find that is offset by reliability.
Others try to flip coins like this to a dealer (this can work out – or not) or even attempt eBay (please don’t – you’ll almost certainly get scammed out of your coins). Of course, more work can get you more upside. On the last “big coin deal” you would have made less than a thousand dollars with PFS and I personally had lined up a $4,000 profit with a local dealer – except thanks to the crappy US Mint IT, I didn’t get a coin.
If you opt-in to the PFS deal, please keep your word. That means if you haven’t un-opted-in by one hour before the sale and you get a coin, you should feel obligated to sell to them as you’ve taken up a spot they could have given someone else. They mitigate risk by lining up their own buyers.
The way it works is that these coin releases on the US Mint website will be extremely popular and many will try to get a coin and fail. The server will no doubt be overloaded and it may prove very frustrating. I wouldn’t bother just for the $100 – $200 profit, but it will also help you complete minimum spend on a credit card easily if you get one.
The American Eagle 2021 Gold Proof Four-Coin Set will cost $4,317.50 or $4,410 – depending on the price of gold – and will net a $200 PFS commission, while the American Eagle 2021 One Ounce Gold Proof Coin (at least I think that is the right link – it’s not clear) will cost $2,325.00 or $2,375.00 and net a $100 commission.
Don’t use an Amex card as it will now code as a cash advance. Visa or Mastercard should be just fine. Note that you’ll see PayPal as an option but that won’t work on a new release. You should have a card saved on your computer and autofill it for the best odds. Obviously, you should also have a US Mint account all set up and login a few minutes before noon.
Follow the instructions PFS gives you to a T. Most importantly, do not open the box when it arrives. At all.
If interested, opt-in to the deal at PFS Buyers Club.
If you don’t already have a card you are working on minimum spend for, you will be out of luck getting a new card number in time with Citi (no instant card numbers) or Chase (you can add to mobile wallet right away, but you can’t get the card number). Amex often, but not always, does give instant account numbers – but then you can’t use an Amex for a coin anymore (codes as cash advance.)
Therefore, it’s too late to apply for a new card just for this, but it’s a solid way to go for meeting minimum spend on a card you already have.
It’s also a great way to work towards a spend bonus. For instance, spending $15,000 on a World of Hyatt card in a year gets you a free Category 1-4 night. Likewise, $15,000 spend on a Hilton Surpass or Hilton Business credit card gets you a free night. So, I like deals like this to work towards a bonus like that.
