While I tend to assume most people reading MilesTalk already have a Marriott account, there’s certainly room to think that SOME of you do not….

This earned free night will be spendable at a Category 1-5 Marriott hotel. What I will say I am confused about, is wether they mean a Cat 1-5 in the *existing* program or in the new program that launches August 1st. In the new program, that would be any hotel except the highest category. In the current program, it can be somewhat of a challenge to find a Cat 5 or lower hotel, though it’s definitely doable! For more information on the new categories, you can read this post.
I suspect it will be in the current program and mapped to the new categories (anything costing 25,000 points or less). Just an educated guess.
This is also a good time to tell you my strategy on rewards programs I haven’t joined. I’ll always join ahead of a stay, but not completely speculatively. And that is precisely so I’m not excluded from a promotion like this should it arise.
