Chase Revamps Entire United Credit Card Lineup
Chase has just revamped the entire lineup of United co-branded credit cards in a pretty significant way.
Annual fees are going up across the board and a variety of new benefits and statement credit offers are being added to offset the annual fee increase. It’s not been that long since Amex took a chainsaw to its Delta lineup of credit cards in a similar fashion.
Chase / United Limited Time Bonus Offers
Chase is also softening the blow with some nicely elevated welcome bonus offers, effective today through May 7th, 2025.
- United℠ Explorer Card – Earn 80,000 United MileagePlus Miles, after spending $3,000 on qualifying purchases in the first three months of opening an account, with
annual fee waived for the first 12 months from approval. - United Quest℠ Card– Earn 90,000 United MileagePlus Miles and 500 PQP, after spending $4,000 on qualifying purchases in the first three months of opening an account.
- United Club℠ Card– Earn 95,000 United MileagePlus Miles, after spending $5,000 on qualifying purchases in the first three months of opening an account.
- United℠ Business Card– Earn 125,000 United MileagePlus Miles, after spending $5,000 on qualifying purchases in the first three months of opening an account.
- United℠ Club Business Card – Earn 125,000 United MileagePlus Miles, after spending $5,000 on qualifying purchases in the first three months of opening an account.
- United Gateway℠ Card – Earn 30,000 United MileagePlus Miles, after spending $1,000 on qualifying purchases in the first three months of opening an account, with 0% APR for the first 12 months.
United Credit Cards are Seeing Annual Fee Increases Across the Board
Well, except for the no-annual fee Gateway Card which is still free of an annual fee.
Here are the new annual fees:
- United℠ Explorer Card – $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $150 (Was $95)
- United Quest℠ Card – $350 (was $250)
- United Club℠ Card – $695 (was $525)
- United℠ Business Card – $150 (was $99)
- United℠ Club Business Card – $695 (was $450)
- United Gateway℠ Card – Remains $0
There’s no way to sugarcoat the size of these increases. The base cards (Explorer and Business) go to $150 from $95 and $99, respectively – just over a 50% increase. The Quest is up 40%. The Club cards have the lowest percentage increase but still pop eyes at $695 each.
We’ll have to look at the new benefits to see how well they offset the annual fees, so let’s jump into that.

When Do the New Annual Fees Kick in?
If you’re applying today forward, everything will already apply – both the new annual fee and all the benefits.
If you are en existing cardmember, you also get the new benefits as of today, March 24, 2025, but you won’t pay the new annual fee until your first renewal date on or after August 1st, 2025.
Exception: For the Explorer card, you’ll pay the new annual fee with the next renewal you have that is on or after January 1, 2026. That’s quite a long time from now!
What is Renowned Hotels and Resorts for United®
Cardmembers?
Great question. I had to ask 😉
Here’s the official answer:
“Renowned Hotels and Resorts for United Cardmembers is a curated selection of world-class hotels and resorts, formerly known as the Luxury Resort and Hotel Collection. Booking through Chase with your eligible Chase United credit card (Quest, Club, Club Business, President Plus and President Plus Business) unlocks distinctive cardmember benefits. These benefits include daily breakfast for two, $100 property credit, a room upgrade at check-in (if available), early check-in and late check-out (if available) and complimentary Wi-Fi. The $100 property credit may be used toward dining, spa, or other activities at the property.”
It’s only currently available for the mentioned United co-brand cards and is obviously a bit like Amex’s FHR program, however I’m told that these bookings are considered third party and won’t be eligible for the hotel’s loyalty program elite benefits or points.
Are the Changes Good? Bad? Break it Down!
I have to say, I’m VERY impressed with this revamp. Nobody likes to see annual fee increases, but they are a fact of life as is inflation. It’s just instead of going up a few bucks at a time, issuers tend to wait many years and then raise the fee somewhat significantly. The old annual fees have been in place for a LONG time.
Now, there’s a TON of new or improved benefits in each card and this would be a 20,000 word article if I tried to dissect each and every one.
That said, of course I’m going to give some opinions! Keep in mind that I find it pretty easy to use a rideshare credit at least 1-2x a month so my opinions are based on that. Some of you may find other perks more interesting. For example I don’t use Instacart but many do – so you might not want the rideshare credits but then you value the Instacart credits instead.
With the Explorer card, you are seeing a $55 fee increase. In exchange, you get $5 a month in rideshare credits (so that alone would make you back the annual fee increase + $5), you can earn more PQPs annually, you have the $100 United travel credit if you spend $10,000 a year on the card (hopefully that is on United flights! Remember you have more flexibility earning on a Chase Sapphire card all things being equal…), and the 10,000 mile award flight discount if you spend $20,000. Then you have the United Hotels credit, and the Avis/Budget/JSX, and Instacart credits.
If it were me with the card, I’d probably only “value” the rideshare credits but I’d use them and cover that extra annual fee. I’d also consider a JSX flight if the price were right and I have occasionally seen well priced JSX flights.
With the Quest card, that extra $100 in annual fee gets you $200 in United travel credit after each renewal and $100 in rideshare credits – which is instant offset of the higher fee.
You also get a jump start 1,000 PQPs annually starting in 2026 (valuable!), the ability to earn up to 18,000 PQP from spend annually (Premier Platinum if on spend alone), the $150 to use on Renowned Hotels stays, and the Avis/Budget/JSX/Instacart credits.
On a yearly basis, with the $200 United travel credit, you are essentially getting a net effective LOWER annual fee of $150 compared to $250 flat before.
With the Business Card, you are paying $51 more and getting $100 in rideshare statement credits. Then you can grab $100 in statement credits for booking a hotel night via United Hotels, use the $25 statement credit on a FareLock, and potentially use the Budget/Avis, JSX, and up to $120 in Instacart credits.
With the United Club Card, the extra $170 in annual fees are going to be tough for many to swallow, however, it remains the cheapest way to get a United Club membership (cheaper than buying one outright). A few standout additional benefits for the extra annual fee include up to $150 in rideshare credits, up to $240 in Instacart credits, and the $200 statement credit for a Renowned Hotels booking. It’s also huge for big spenders that you can spend all the way to Premier 1K with 28,000 PQPs just from the card. Likewise on the Club Business card.
Then there’s the $50 FareLock credit and the $200 JSX credit. So, there’s plenty there to rationalize the increase as being OK. And I mean that because if you have this card, you no doubt have it primarily for the United Club. The old annual fee was basically too good to last given the cost of the United Club itself and at least here Chase is piling on the extra credits plus that ability to spend your way to Premier 1K.
The Gateway Card is perhaps the one disappointment. Sure, it didn’t get an increased annual fee (it’s still $0!) but you can no longer downgrade to this card and keep your preferred award pricing – unless you spend $10,000 on the card first (which would also come with two checked bags). Come to think about it, that’s probably the point…
That said, if you frequently check TWO bags, the value prop changes since after that $10,000 in annual spend, you would get two checked bags vs. one with the Explorer Card ($150 annual fee). You could pay $10,000 of estimated tax for a $175 fee and get those two checked bags all year long. Thinking out loud there….
Bottom Line
Hey, nobody likes so see across-the-board annual fee increases. But, in my personal opinion, Chase and United is giving you much, much more for the increased annual fees than we saw from Amex in the Delta refresh.
There is something for almost everyone in these updates that offsets or more than offsets the higher fees and if you accept that things go up in price all around you all the time without adding anything for that (inflationary) price increase, this isn’t such bad news after all.

Great job being first out the gate with all the info – you made my morning cuppa more delicious!
My previous keeper combo was Business + Gateway for $99/yr to get 5000 bonus miles, 2x Lounge passes, Bags/Boarding & Expanded awards.
UPDATED keeper combo is still Business + Gateway for $150/yr to get ALL the same things (bit restrictive Lounge passes tho) PLUS the coupons – which I am certain I’ll use more than $50 worth of Uber/Instacart. Net win, and hopefully we get *DATAPOINTS* on if these are considered “NEW” cards for welcome offer eligibility.
Thanks for the kind words! The cards do all seem to have 24 month language in them. I know the card names online are different, but I’m pretty sure they will be counting the previous versions. They didn’t even change card art.
