I didn’t see this coming at all, but Hyatt has finally (finally!) added a nice property in a *prime* Santa Monica, California location under the Unbound brand.

I don’t know much about the interior of the hotel, but I’ve sure walked by it enough! It’s right on Ocean Ave overlooking the beach and steps from the famous Santa Monica Pier.

Hyatt recently added a Hyatt Centric in Santa Monica, but in a lousy location south of the 10 freeway in an area with more homeless than elsewhere in Santa Monica, although I must caveat you’ll still see plenty all over downtown Santa Monica including on Ocean by the Georgian and on the 3rd St Promenade.

The other primary Hyatt option on the Westside of LA is my favorite LA area hotel, The Shay, which is in Culver City – a clean and up-and-came neighborhood with the train to the beach right next door.

If you must be right by the beach and in a Hyatt, though, this will be your new choice. It’s a Category 6 meaning that with the recent Hyatt award chart changes, it will range from 20,000 to as much as 40,000 points a night. It’s good value on the low end, not so great on the high end.

Here are rates for a random night in August.

And the points cost (now, before the expanded award charts start… book now if you want it!

And here are the suite options for SUA / upgrades. (Assuming the Standard Suite will be the SUA choice).

Dave Grossman
I got "in the game" in 2003 and since then I've collected literally millions and millions of frequent flyer miles and hotel points. I've flown around the world in first class seats that would cost $29,000 using frequent flyer miles and a few bucks in tax. And I've stayed in some of the finest hotels - all for free! Several years ago, I realized many of my friends actually thought I was paying for these!! So I started sharing my tips. It's long been a passion, but when I hosted a session on Miles and Points at the South by Southwest festival, my love of the game intensified and this blog was born. Since then, I've written my book, MilesTalk: Live Your Wildest Travel Dreams Using Miles and Points (2nd Edition) - (author profile), give seminars on miles and points all over the world, and occasionally write for publications such as Frommer's and Forbes Advisor.
