As much as we keep hoping for a quick return to global travel, this is a stark reminder that countries will be “opening up” at their own pace and using different metrics. Some are already open or opening soon because they need the tourist dollars more than anything else.
Others, like Australia and Japan, are erring on the side of focusing on eradicating the virus before risking a reopening. Japan, specifically, cites the new variants that have been emerging globally as a primary reason why the country will only host local spectators for the Olympics (assuming they still happen).
As stated in the Japan Times, “Olympics minister Tamayo Marukawa, in a meeting with representatives from each, stressed the need to carefully consider whether to let in foreign spectators, citing uncertainty about the coronavirus including its variants.”
In April, the committee will decide on capacity at venues for locals.
I know of several that had successfully used Virgin Atlantic miles to book First or Business Class seats on ANA to Japan (RT is just 110,000 – 120,000 points in First Class) during the Olympics in July. I had made a booking for June to try / review the new ANA Suites in First and Business, but alas that was cancelled. Now, it appears the cancellation is irrelevant as it seems clear that Americans won’t be allowed into Japan by then.
