oneworld status match

It’s a paid status match via Status Match so let’s get that right out of the way 😉

This match was previously only available to non-US residents.

Right now, the door is open to us Americans and it’s a great opportunity to secure mid-tier oneworld Sapphire status for $149. Applications are live now here.

The status will be good for 12 months and may take up to 5 days to process.

oneworld Sapphire will get you two free checked bags on AA (for you and companions on the same reservation) while on Alaska it gets you 2 checked bags, but only for you. As you can see, benefits vary wildly by airline despite the oneworld standardization (which, for example, only guarantees one free checked bag!) Interesting, while oneworld Sapphire generally gets you Main Cabin Extra seats on AA, it’s limited to certain airlines and RJ is not one of them. I suppose YMMV on that.

You’ll also get priority check-in at the First/Business Class line which can be huge at times when checking bags at certain airports.

The biggest benefit would be access to oneworld Business Class lounges when flying any oneworld airline. This includes domestic AA/AS flights! So you’d get access to Alaska lounges and AA lounges (including business class sections of AA Flagship lounges) and any other oneworld business class lounge that may be available.

For $149, I’d think that if you travel at all on AA/AS (or BA, etc) you will get this fee back in spades.

I’ll be going for it myself. I don’t have AA/AS status and sometimes book coach awards on both. This will get me proper check-in and lounge treatment (plus earlier boarding) making that much more tolerable for the next 12 months!

What you’ll need to match:

Well, $149 to start if matching to Gold Sparrow 😉 But beyond that, this is a match, not a gift, and so you do need to meet eligibility via a competitive status. Again, only Gold Sparrow gets you oneworld lounge access.

A big note is that while you can also use hotel statuses to match, those only get you to “Silver Jay” which is only oneworld Ruby…. however, if that’s all you can match to, you probably should! Why? Because you’ll get access to the priority check in line when flying AA / Alaska and at $49 for 12 months, you’d probably get value from that alone?
