citizenM to Marriott

This article has been updated on Aug 28th. I incorrectly read the email from Marriott as being an absorption of CitizenM+ with members getting Bonvoy Gold in exchange. Marriott emailed to let me know that isn’t the case and that CitizenM+ will remain and continue, with Marriott Bonvoy Gold bing given as an added benefit of CitizenM+.

CitizenM is a collection of 37 hotels, acquired this year by Marriott.

They have a paid membership tier called CitizenM+ (which you could briefly get free with any other airline/hotel status for 12 months). For $120 a year, you get 15% off rates, late checkout, and even free co-working at select hotels.

There was some hope that after Marriott acquired CitizenM, CitizenM+ members might be welcomed into Marriott Bonvoy with some limited time elevated status or a challenge or… something.

It has now been announced that CitizenM+ members will be given Marriott Bonvoy Gold in addition to their M+ benefits. In fact, M+ will continue, although the price will rise to $170 for members who sign up or renew on or after October 28, 2025.

I suppose that extra $50 covers the cost of Marriott Bonvoy Gold membership, though I don’t think Gold is worth $50 a year, personally.

Sadly, Marriott Gold is pretty much a throwaway status.

It’s better than absolutely nothing, but it comes with no free breakfast, no noticeable upgrades, no guaranteed late check out. I guess you do get 25% more earned Bonvoy points on stays so, there’s that?
