southwest credit card bonus offer 30%

Good news: Chase just let me know this offer has been extended to July 10th.

The bonus offers for getting a new Southwest credit card have fluctuated often over the years, but this is the first one I’ve seen in quite some time that has a unique kicker aside from a 1 year Companion Pass, which we’ve seen yearly recently.

The new offer is:

Earn 60,000 Rapid Rewards points and a 30% off promo code for travel via Southwest Airlines after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months from account opening. 30% promo code discount is on base fare applied before taxes and fees and available for use until October 31, 2024 once all qualifications are met.

You can learn more about each card and how to apply for this new offer at these links:

You cannot currently have any of these three cards (though you may have either or both Southwest Business cards and still apply for a personal card under this offer).

You should still be eligible to apply if you are over 5/24.

Note that the previous offer gave 50,000 miles after $1,000 in spend. While this offer requires $2,000 more spend within 3 months, it also gives you 10,000 more miles plus the 30% promo code kicker.

And of course, that means 10,000 more miles towards a complete Southwest Companion Pass for Up to Two Years strategy.

The code is good for one time use on any one way or round trip fare and the discount is on the base fare only.

Now there were a few things I needed to ask Southwest to be sure what a few things in the fine print.

I can confirm (via Southwest’s Managing Director of Loyalty)

  • The code is one time use; one way or round trip.
  • You can use this on an award ticket. If your base fare is 100,000 points, 30,000 points will come off with the discount code.
  • This functions like any SW promo code in that you can use it for up to 8 people in a reservation.

This is huge. Let’s say you have a $500 base fare and buy for yourself + 7. You would get a discount of $1,050!! And this is in addition to the 60,000 bonus points from meeting the offer’s minimum spend!

I also asked Chase what happens if you have to cancel the flight and was told

“Changes made to the itinerary after the Booking Period has expired will eliminate qualifications for this promotion and will result in forfeiture of any promotion code savings. The code is not combinable with other promotion codes or fares with the exception of the Companion Pass.”

You can learn more about each card and how to apply for this new offer at these links:

  1. Received 30% promo code but it will only allow discount to be used on cash fare purchases. Any hope of change such that it can be stacked with points redemption?

  2. Phone agent agreed that points redemption did not appear to be excluded, but she could not help directly. Suggested to submit via Contact Us on website. By end of day, that request had reached escalation status and that is where things stand as of now.

  3. 3 days went by, but today received an email that contained this:

“We have made adjustments that will allow you to successfully use your code on reservations booked with points as well as dollars. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused, and we appreciate your patience.”

Went in and successfully booked online as initially hoped/intended.

Not sure if this kicked off a universal fix, or if each member will have to contact SW separately in order to use with a points redemption.
