Prime Big Deal Days is live and runs through October 7.

Before buying anything, take a minute to see whether Amazon has offered you a discount for using a small number of Amex Membership Rewards or Citi ThankYou points.

These are Pay With Points offers, so what appears on your own Amazon account is all that matters. Different people get targeted for different deals.

What Amex Amazon Pay With Points offer is showing up?

On October 2, my Amazon account showed 40% off up to $35 when using at least 1,429 Membership Rewards points. Remember that while it feels like wasting 1,429 points, you still get $10 toward the purchase from that (that’s the standard 0.6 cents in value we’d never redeem for without a promo), so if you get $35 off plus $10 for using about $20 worth of points, you are ahead by more than double. Yes, I’ll do it myself. The big difference from previous Pay ONE Point offers if that you could spread those out over multiple purchases while this only makes sense all in one shot.

New to this? You may be targeted for 50% off up to $50 which they say is for eligible Prime customers redeeming Membership Rewards points for the first time and 15% off up to $15 for eligible active points users.

Those offers are also listed through December 31.

Check your Amex offer here. Yours may look like mine, one of the versions Amazon announced, something else, or nothing at all. Read the minimum points and eligible-product terms on your own offer.

What Citi ThankYou offer is showing up?

I just got 20% off up to $15 by spending 125 Citi ThankYou points. That’s what showed up for me, and the offer page says it applies to eligible products. Yours may be different, or you may not see one at all. Check your Citi offer here and go by the terms Amazon shows you.

How many points should you use?

The basic strategy hasn’t changed: use the minimum number of points your offer requires to unlock the discount. Amazon may default to paying for the whole purchase with points, and I noticed it today for the first time in a while. Change that.

Make sure the discount appears at checkout before placing your order. Then check your payment choice the next time you shop, because Amazon can remember that you chose points.

Don’t assume the discount applies to a particular Prime Big Deal Days item until you see it at checkout: Eligible products are items that can be purchased using Shop With Points at checkout at Amazon.com. If it’s shipped and sold by Amazon.com, you can definitely use it, but recently we’ve seen some other items eligible for Shop with Points. It will be clear at checkout if you item(s) qualify).

Where are the other Amazon Pay With Points offers?

My Amazon Pay With Points guide has the links for the other card issuers and more detail on the checkout steps.

Dave Grossman
I got "in the game" in 2003 and since then I've collected literally millions and millions of frequent flyer miles and hotel points. I've flown around the world in first class seats that would cost $29,000 using frequent flyer miles and a few bucks in tax. And I've stayed in some of the finest hotels - all for free! Several years ago, I realized many of my friends actually thought I was paying for these!! So I started sharing my tips. It's long been a passion, but when I hosted a session on Miles and Points at the South by Southwest festival, my love of the game intensified and this blog was born. Since then, I've written my book, MilesTalk: Live Your Wildest Travel Dreams Using Miles and Points (2nd Edition) - (author profile), give seminars on miles and points all over the world, and occasionally write for publications such as Frommer's and Forbes Advisor.
