As we move further into summer with more reopening activity, COVID-19 and economic worries have travel providers looking for ways to engage hesitant travelers.

In an interesting offer from Greece’s flag carrier Aegean Airlines, families are invited to take advantage of their Flex fare promotion, where children under 12 fly for just the taxes/fees, and pets can fly for 50% off.

Kids Fly (almost) Free on Aegean Airlines

Per the promo page:

This summer, travel with all your family members, with flexibility and everything you need for your summer vacation:

  • Free tickets for infants and children up to 12 years old
  • 1 additional free checked baggage up to 23kg for the whole family
  • Double Miles+Bonus award miles
  • 50% discount on all upfront seats, upon availability
  • 50% discount on travelling with pets

This promotion is valid for new Flex fare bookings made through June 30th, 2020. It can be applied to international and domestic travel between July 1, 2020 and September 6, 2020.

I tested it out with an August trip from Athens to Amsterdam and back for two adults and two children. Keep in mind – it does not work for the GoLight fare, or for Business fares, only Flex.

The fares listed above are the total price of the base fare plus taxes, and it’s not clearly broken down below. I believe roughly 63€ in charges per child is included below. Even though it’s not fully “free,” a round trip flight of this length (about 3 hours each way) for 151€ per person (currently about $170) is a fantastic price.

The really cool part is that there does not appear to be a limit on the number of children per associated adult, beyond the maximum of 9 persons per booking. Taxes do appear to be added for the child fares. I’ve added a single adult ticket for comparison.

The offer page indicates you must include the promo code FAMILYDEAL in your search, but it does not appear to be necessary for the flights to price out correctly. However, if you intend to take advantage of the other aspects of the promo, you must include it in the promotional code box on the booking page.

Aegean Airlines is a Star Alliance member. The extra miles in the offer refer to award miles in Aegean’s program, not extra miles towards tier status. However, Aegean’s reward program is notable for its relatively straightforward path to Gold status – and thus Star Alliance Gold – still based on distance flown rather than money spent.

There are still a lot of COVID-related international travel restrictions, but if you’re based in Europe this summer and have children you’d like to travel with, this could be a great opportunity to earn miles and save some travel money!
