Per Ziggy over at Traveling for Miles, those with non-refundable Hyatt reservations booked before today are eligible for a bit of a “make good” if they need to cancel a non-refundable reservation.

10,000 World of Hyatt Points if you have to cancel

Under the offer, you can take 10,000 World Of Hyatt points (which I value at around $160) if you have to cancel your non-refundable reservation.

Ziggy says that the offer is for those with an “Advance Purchase rate non-refundable reservations made directly with Hyatt on or before 8 March 2020, for travel through June 2020,” and says that they ” will be offered 10,000 World of Hyatt points as compensation should they wish to cancel.”

How to Cancel and Get the 10,000 Points

You would need to call Hyatt or email [email protected] 48 hours or more before your trip (24 hours if Explorist or Globalist).

Is this a Good Policy?

I think this is a great move by Hyatt which costs them little and engenders some good will. They were smart to avoid the program being “gamed” by limiting it to reservations before the announcement and since it is per stay and not per night, very few people will have a sunk cost anywhere near $160. It will most likely be either “more” or “much more.”

I haven’t seen any other chain offering a broad, global waiver at all – instead only limiting cancellations to those pockets of the world that are currently impossible to travel to.

We’d all love the ability to cancel for any reason during this time, but the hotels have to think about their solvency as well. There may be a more generous policy to come the longer this goes on, but for now it’s a nice step in customer relations.

Have you had to change or cancel a trip because of coronavirus? How do you feel about this offer?
